Greatest Comebacks

Bulgaria 3 Germany 2
I was fortunate enough to be in Sofia in 1995 for the European Championship qualifier and rematch of the 1994 World Cup Quarter final between these two. Where Germany went 2-0 up before Stoichkov began the Bulgarian comeback that saw them win 3-2.

Mansfield Town 4 Bristol City 5
How about being 4-2 down with just 9 minutes left. This was the situation facing Leroy Lita when he came on as a substitute for Bristol City at Mansfield. He helped inspire the side to turn the deficit round starting with a penalty in the 87th minute. (Unfortunately I have not been able to find a clip of this one).

Leeds United 4 Vfb Stuttgart 1
I have seen a number of games where Leeds have been second best, but o a few occasions they have risen from the dead that is 3-0 down. The most memorable of these would be the game against Stuttgart in 1991 when Leeds lost the first led 3-0 in Germany. Leeds went into the second leg without much hope but the evening ended in gallant failure (Is there a penalty better than McAllister’s?) as we won 4-1, but going out on the away goals rule. However the next day it was revealed that Stuttgart had played an ineligible player and the match was to be replayed as a one off in Barcelona. I was unable to attend but Leeds completed the comeback winning 2-1.

Leeds United 4 Derby County 3
Lee Bowyer scoring in the 90th minute at home to Derby will be remembered by all that were there to witness another comeback

Southampton 3 Leeds United 4
A shocking display at Southampton saw us 3-0 down and the highlight of the day looked like it was going to be shopping at the Bicester retail park. Paul Butler started the comeback as we recovered the deficit to record a memorable victory.

Olympiakos 4 OFI 5
So coming from 3 goals down is impressive. But from 4 down. This was what I witnessed in Greece back in 1990, can’t believe I found a video clip but here it is 8 goals at one end ( chose well and sat on the half way line) as OFI defeat Olympiakos in Piraeus.

Leeds United 4 Preston North End 6
I tried to forget about this one! hence the fact it is hidden down here.

Leeds did well to turn around the one goal deficit but it was evident that once they had established their 4-1 lead that they should change tactics as there had been warning signs in the first half. Inevitably we kept playing the same way and we paid the price.
