Decided to take the long way round to the airport, calling in at Bolton Wanderers on the Saturday, before departing for Sydney from Heathrow on Sunday 11th January .
Of course it was all for more research. I understood that Bolton had signed a striker from Newcastle Jets and I was keen to see him play to help judge the standard in the A-league.
I found that he had scored 9 goals in 23 appearances in his first season, making him popular enough for the cameras to follow him round the pitch for 90 minutes. Now you may remember something about this, but I think you will be thinking of either George Best v Coventry City, but that was in 1970 or, more likely Zinedine Zidane in 2005.
Unfortunately the cameras following the person I am referring about didn’t make it to the cinema, but that’s probably because he didn’t get Mogwai to do the soundtrack.
Anyway Emile Heskey’s 9 goals enabled him to get a contract for another year but 1 goal in 19 appearances and they let him leave.
I found that he partnered a certain Michael Bridges during his first season and that Bridges is still at Newcastle Jets, but alas has not been allocated a squad number for this season. Also at the Jets is a certain Joel Griffiths who made two appearances for Leeds during 2005-6.
As for the rest of the journey, well the plane departs London Heathrow at 22.00 arrives in Kuala Lumpur on Monday at 18.25. I then have one hour to catch the flight to Sydney (a bit tight!!) arriving in Sydney on Tuesday morning at 06.40 in plenty of time for Australia v Oman that evening.
Looking at it it looks like a long time, but with an eleven hour time difference and thinking about my epic bus journey in Brazil….it’s not that long at all.
