Highlights for me, include being lucky enough to witness all but one of our Champions League games in our run to the Semi Final, with the opportunity to travel to the best teams in Europe. Winning 4-1 at Aston Villa (and going to see The Fall play well in the same evening) just before Villa were crowned European Champions. The football we played during the year 200o when we would have been champions if only the league were played over a calendar year. Managing to get a ticket for Bournemouth and see us get promoted. Beating Bristol Rovers, (no thanks to Mad Max) to return to the Championship, and of course seeing us win the Division One title in 1992 which we still hold to this day!
Lows, well there isn’t enough space.
I guess witnessing Michael Bridges getting injured at Besiktas, is the one that stands out. Why? I believe he was the player that could have made a difference in the team and helped us qualify for the Champions League, which when you start to think about it is why we are where we are today.
Results wise, Hereford 2-0 miserable night game, Stoke 6-2 & 7-2 famous for the quote after the first game that we won’t let in six again….we didn’t. Man City 6-1 Full Members Cup – why don’t we take these competitions seriously. Plymouth 6-3 early kick off, Leeds fans ruined the pitch (after the match walking across it), Shrewsbury 5-1 end of season players winding down, Luton Town 5-1!, Swansea City 5-1 opening day it’s only the beginning, Arsenal 4-1 at home – how many times, Coventry City (McSheffrey), Oxford United 4-1, 5-2, Portsmouth 3-3 (didn’t go to the 6-1 was in Prague, but this draw felt like a defeat as we were 3-1 up in the 89th minute of this midweek away match), Scunthorpe United 4-2 at The Old Showground, Peterborough United F.A. Cup (why didn’t the snow come earlier?), Tranmere Rovers the game before Dom Matteo became a legend, Swindon Town 3-0 and Billy Paynter scores twice, Derby County the last ten games, Cardiff City F.A. Cup real atmosphere but marked a turning point in the clubs fortunes, Colchester United, can’t believe we went back to Layer Road after all those years and lost again, Rotherham United in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, Milton Keynes Dons just who was Mansour Assoumani?, Preston 4-6 The Beast, Blackpool 0-5 Rachubka, Watford 1-6 playing 3-3-2, there was a 7-3 loss at home but I can’t remember who that was against (Was it Lucas Radebe’s testimonial?) I could go on, but it is painful, and over the years I could probably give a low against every club we have played (except Bristol City. Sorry, Graeme). York City, Mansfield Town, Histon, Hereford United, Cheltenham Town, Exeter City, Rochdale, Sheffield Wednesday and whoever we play next week!
